Annual Meeting of the Technical Working Group on Nuclear Knowledge Management

Nuclear knowledge management (NKM) throughout the life cycle of nuclear facilities has been recognized as an increasingly important element of the nuclear sector in recent years. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in September 2012 encouraged the Director General and the Secretariat to continue to strengthen their current and planned efforts in the NKM area, in a holistic and interdepartmental manner, while consulting and engaging with Member States and other relevant international organizations, and to further increase the level of awareness of efforts in managing nuclear knowledge.

In line with this, in April 2013 the Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Energy (SAGNE) recommended that the four main elements of the IAEA’s NKM programme continue to be given priority, i.e. methodology, services, education and system platforms, and proposed to establish a Technical Working Group on Nuclear Knowledge Management (TWG-NKM).

The TWG-NKM is a group of experienced and senior nuclear sector managers who provide strategic and practical advice and assistance to the IAEA for programme development and implementation, reflecting global, regional and national issues and priorities of concern in the area of NKM.

The scope of the TWG-NKM is to provide periodic input to the IAEA Department of Nuclear Energy for the NKM programme. The TWG-NKM is expected to provide feedback on KM issues or priorities in Member States such as to identify new or changing topics or focus areas of interest from the perspective of various nuclear organizations and stakeholders and over the whole nuclear technology life cycle, including:

  • national nuclear regulatory authorities;
  • nuclear facility operators;
  • nuclear decommissioning organizations;
  • design organizations;
  • technical support organizations;
  • research and development organizations, and
  • nuclear education institutes.

Programmatic context

The Nuclear Knowledge Management Section is organizing this TWG-NKM meeting under Project ‘Implementing Knowledge Management in Nuclear Organizations’ of the IAEA’s Programme and Budget for 2018–2019.

Venue and Participation

The fourth TWG-NKM meeting will be held at the IAEA’s Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, on 27-31 May 2019.

Officially nominated members and observers of the TWG-NKM are invited to attend the meeting. Member States may nominate an alternate meeting participant if a nominated member is unable to attend clearly distinguishing between the nomination for TWG-NKM membership and the nomination to attend the TWG-NKM meeting.

Objectives of the Meeting

The objectives of the meeting are:

  • reviewing the observations and feedback made during/after the third TWG-NKM meeting and actions taken by NKM Section and TWG-NKM members;
  • NKM Section providing TWG-NKM meeting participants an update of the NKM Section’s current programmes and initiatives and reporting on progress over the past year (presentations by NKM Section staff members);
  • discussing the planned NKM Section programme for 2019, and potential strategic priorities for the longer term;
  • reviewing the current NKM Section publications (presentations by NKM Section staff members), assessing existing gaps in publications and advising on preparation of new ones;
  • receiving an update on NKM issues, challenges, progress and priorities from TWG-NKM members (presentations expected from each of the TWG-NKM members on their respective country’s needs);
  • discussing expectations and roles of TWG-NKM members and action plans for the coming year.
