UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Al Rabia Centre for Agricultural Research in Baghdad. The Centre, among others, conducts research on seeds, plants and plant by-products for specific agricultural or industrial applications. Another biological team, together with a member of the multidisciplinary team, inspected the Technical Military Depot for the Air Force, Al Taji.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC missile team traveled 125 km south of Baghdad to inspect the Al Ameer Factory, which is also known as the Saddam State Establishment. The factory was involved in the assembly of SCUD missile components before 1991, but has since been responsible for the fabrication of artillery equipment. Another missile team returned from Basra to Baghdad today. This team fixed inventory tags to the Al Fatah missiles at an army unit north of Basra yesterday.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

A joint IAEA and UNMOVIC chemical team flew by helicopter approximately 240 km northwest of Baghdad to inspect the Sharqat EMIS Facility. The site was originally designed to house an Electromagnetic Isotope Separation Facility (EMIS). Presently, a factory operated by the Al Hadhin State Company produces concentrated nitric acid on the site. This was the first air-born operation in which a MI8-MTV heavy-load helicopter was used, along with two Bell-212 helicopters. The first two air-borne operations used Bell-212 helicopters. The MI8 carried one vehicle for the team.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors traveled 68 km north of Baghdad to inspect the Ibn Sina Centre. In this large centre, which is also known as Tarmiyah, the team inspected several buildings to verify the equipment and raw materials used in chemical processes liked to missile activities, such as the production of ammonium perchlorate for solid propellants and the regeneration of oxidizer and fuel used in liquid propulsion.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected two sites: the State Company for Drugs and Medical Appliances Marketing at Al Addile, about 10 km northwest of Baghdad and the same company located at Al Dabash, about 28 km northwest of Baghdad. This company imports, among other things, medical equipment and supplies.

An UNMOVIC chemical team visited the Al Mamoun Factory of the Al Rasheed State Company, roughly 60 km south of Baghdad. The team inspected a polyester plant, chemical stores and rubber and plastic workshops.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq. 08 January 2003

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors returned to the Al Mamoun Plant of the Al Rasheed State Company for the third day in a row. Some members of the team tagged solid propellant motors of the Al Fatah rockets. Other members of the team went to the propellant production area to witness the casting of solid propellant into an Al Fatah motor case. This was the second time in two weeks that the missile team witnessed propellant production activities at the site. The first observation took place on 31 December.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 7 January 2003

The first air-borne inspection took place today. An UNMOVIC chemical team left the Al Rasheed Air Base in Baghdad on three Bell-212 helicopters at 7:00 a.m. and flew roughly two hours, 300 km northwest, to inspect the Al Qaim State Company for Phosphate. This company is primarily a fertilizer plant. Two Iraqi helicopters accompanied those of the UN. The team spent about six hours at the site and then returned to the Al Rasheed Air Base at about 5:15 p.m. It was a successful use of helicopters in support of an inspection activity.

UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 6 January 2003

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Ibn Seena Centre, located approximately 10 km northwest of Baghdad. The Centre is a facility for the production of veterinary drugs.

An UNMOVIC team of missile inspectors went to an Iraqi army base far south of Baghdad, where the team started tagging Iraq’s ground-to-ground solid propellant rockets Al Fatah. The remaining Al Fatah rockets, now in the possession of the Iraqi army, will be tagged in the course of this week.

IAEA Board of Governors Adopts Resolution on Safeguards in North Korea

The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution on the implementation of IAEA safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) 6 January 2003. The Board -- the 35-member policymaking body of the Agency -- took the action after consideration of a report from IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei.
