Fruits of Labour

Vol. 48-2

03/2007

The March 2007 IAEA Bulletin edition is published a few months before the IAEA’s 50th anniversary. In this half-century, the Agency has helped Member States using peaceful nuclear technology in a variety of fields — from pest control to analysing art pieces — and building adequate facilities. The IAEA has also been the main safeguard against proliferation of nuclear weapons. This issue takes a look at the achievements of the IAEA, its current challenges, and its future. Nuclear power becomes particularly valuable in a context mixing climate change, relative energy supply insecurity, and continuous need increase. Nuclear fusion is promising and will be investigated by ITER. With the development of more nuclear technologies and applications, safety needs to be updated, from product labelling to emergency planning.
