UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 17 December 2002

One UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Department of Biotechnology-College of Sciences at Baghdad University at Al-Jadiriyia in Baghdad. The University is a State-run institution and under the Ministry of Education. This site was previously declared and monitored. The Department carries out basic research and teaching for Master's and Doctoral degree students.

Another biological team headed for Mosul to inspect previously declared biological sites in the region.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 16 December 2002

Two UNMOVIC teams of missile inspectors visited separate locations involved in missile activity. One team visited the Saad General Company, which is located in central Baghdad and is owned by the Military Industrialization Corporation. The company is an engineering firm, which carries out engineering design work, construction and commissioning of projects. The second team inspected the Taji Fiberglass production plant, now part of the Thaat Al Sawary plant. When last inspected in 1998, the fiberglass plant employed very few people. Today it employs over 200 people.

News Update on Iraq Inspections

Two UNMOVIC teams of missile inspectors visited separate locations involved in missile activity. One team inspected the Tho Al Fekar factory, which is located about 40 km northwest of Baghdad. The factory belongs to the Al Rasheed State Company. It is concerned with the manufacture of mechanical parts for several solid propellant rockets. The other team went to the Al Mutassem Solid Rocket Plant, which is owned by the Military Industrialization Corporation.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 14 December 2002

One UNMOVIC biological team went back to the Communicable Diseases Control Centre in Baghdad this morning. The team removed the tagged seals from the locked rooms and inspected the laboratories inside. The team did not find any signs of break-in or break-in attempts on the rooms, including windows. The inspection was completed in about one hour. This team then joined the main biological team, which inspected the Al Tuwaitha complex.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 13 December 2002

An UNMOVIC team went to inspect the Communicable Diseases Control Centre in Baghdad today. The Centre is a government facility under the Ministry of Health. This site was included in the Iraqi declaration of 1 October 2002 and is a new site. The same team had confirmed the location of the site on 10 December and decided to inspect the site today.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 12 December 2002

An UNMOVIC team attended a test launch of a short-range ballistic missile being developed by Iraq. The test took place at a test range approximately 200 km west of Baghdad. The missile is a modified version of a missile already owned by Iraq. The missile range falls within that allowed under the UN resolutions. The UNMOVIC team was able to examine the missile before launch to verify its configuration.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 11 December 2002

An UNMOVIC team visited the Al Fatah factory of the Al Karama State Company. This site is located in the northwest outskirts of Baghdad. The factory is a new site, which commenced operations in 1999 and was included in the Iraqi declaration of 1 October 2002. Further construction is continuing. The site is concerned principally with the manufacture of mechanical parts for the guidance and control system of the Al Samood ballistic missile, as well as parts of the engine and airframe.

UNMOVIC/IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq, 10 December 2002

An UNMOVIC Biological team carried out inspection at two sites, National Project for Controlling Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (NPCBT); and Saddam Center for Biotechnology (SCB). The NPCBT was declared and monitored before 1998. The site inspection was a re-baseline inspection based on the Iraqi declaration of 1 October 2002. The site has limited equipment for small batch production of animal vaccine and diagnostics. The SCB is a newly declared site and a detailed baseline inspection was completed.
