Internships at the IAEA

Practical Experience in an International Environment

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year.

The internships are awarded to persons studying toward a university degree or who have recently received a degree.

The purpose of the programme is:

The duration of internships is normally not less than three months and not more than one year. However, a minimum of one month is also accepted. Interns are subject to the authority of the Director General and undertake to observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions and procedures of the Agency.

Internship Fields

Interns are selected from candidates whose study disciplines are relevant to the Agency´s work in the following fields. (Click to see a full list of eligible degrees in each field):

Hiring Divisions

The Office of the Director General, Office of External Relations and Policy Coordination, Office of Internal Oversight Services, Secretariat of the Policy Making Organs, Office of Nuclear Security, and the Department of Safeguards cannot accept interns.

For information on all other Departments and Divisions, see Hiring Divisions »

Current Internship Opportunities

In addition to our year-round open period for internship applications, occasionally a specific internship opportunity in a Division may arise. The list of specific current internships appears here:

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the internship programme, applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have completed at least two years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of their first degree. Individuals may apply up to two years after the completion of their bachelor´s, master´s, or doctorate degree. Applications submitted after that time will not be considered.

A working (oral and written) knowledge of English is essential. Knowledge of other official Agency languages is an advantage. Interns should be able to adapt to an international, multicultural, multilingual environment, have good communication skills and be able to work in a team.

Benefits and Entitlements

The Agency does not consider interns to be staff members under the Staff Regulations and Rules, and they, therefore, do not enjoy the guarantees and entitlements provided by those Regulations and Rules. Interns are also not entitled to the privileges and immunities accorded by Member States to staff members of the Agency. The internship programme is not a means for subsequently obtaining employment at the Agency. However, interns may apply for vacancy notices as external candidates after a period of three months following the end of their internship.

At the discretion of the receiving office within the Agency, interns may receive a stipend to cover basic subsistence costs. If an intern requests financial assistance, a written request must be submitted along with the application stating the reasons for the request.

The Agency provides medical insurance for the duration of each internship, unless an intern provides proof that he/she already has appropriate coverage. Under certain conditions, the Agency may pay for an intern´s travel. However, interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary passport, visa or other documents that may be required for entering Austria or any other country where the internship will be performed. In Austria, non-Austrian interns who stay for more than three months will be issued a residency permit from the Austrian Foreign Ministry through the Agency.
