Description

The field of beta delayed neutron emission has been of interest since the discovery of nuclear fission. However, the status of compilation of available data is not satisfactory. Applying state-of-the-art experimental techniques, new measurements of beta delayed neutrons have been undertaken at various different laboratories such as GSI (Germany), Triumf (Canada), Riken (Japan) and ORNL (USA). It has been indicated that the IAEA should take a role at the centre of these activities and coordinate the efforts by evaluating, compiling and, eventually, disseminating the results in form of a Reference Database for Beta-delayed Neutron Emission Evaluation. Therefore this CRP is proposed.

Objectives

To enhance Member States’ (MS) knowledge and calculational capabilities in the fields of Nuclear Energy, Safeguards, used fuel and waste management and nuclear sciences by creating a Reference Database for Beta-delayed neutron Emission  that contains both a compilation of existing data and recommended data, which will be made readily available to the user community.

Specific Objectives

Compile the existing Beta-delayed neutron data, in particular half-lives, neutron emission probabilities and neutron spectra for individual precursors

Create a reference database of evaluated data for beta-delayed neutron emission

Define and document the evaluation methodology and the “Standards” for delayed neutron emission in different mass regions,

Produce tools to extrapolate results to unknown nuclei by use of theoretical models or systematic trends

Re-evaluate the beta-delayed neutron reactor constants in suitable group format for energy applications and include in database.
