Speaking on Iran’s nuclear non-proliferation obligations, IAEA Director General Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei said it is absolutely essential that Iran cooperate actively with the Agency and demonstrate full transparency about its nuclear programme.

Addressing the international press corps before IAEA Board meetings this week, Dr. ElBaradei said he would report to the Board that it was in the interests of Iran and the international community to bring the issue to closure without further delay.

“Specifically I’m going to strongly urge Iran to clarify all issues relevant to its enrichment programme to make sure all its enrichment activities have been declared and are under Agency verification. Through inspections we have been making good progress. However, the work is by no way complete, and we still have lots of ground to cover,” he said.

Dr. ElBaradei urged Iran to conclude an Additional Protocol to its safeguards agreement with the IAEA. This would give the Agency the authority to make more comprehensive and intrusive inspections of Iran’s nuclear programme.

“Hopefully the Board will react in an appropriate way and give us the authority to complete the job to verify that their programme is dedicated for peaceful purposes,” Dr. ElBaradei said.
