Description

This report analyses the principles and factors to be considered when selecting a waste minimization strategy, such as the level of development or the availability of technology, national policies and regulations, technical traditions and economic considerations. Its primary objective is to identify all important stages and components in the decision making process which need to be considered when planning and implementing a waste minimization programme during decommissioning operations.
Contents: 1. Introduction; 2. Decommissioning strategies, sources and characteristics of radioactive materials arising from decontamination and decommissioning; 3. Selection of techniques for decontamination and dismantling of nuclear facilities; 4. Waste minimization fundamentals; 5. Factors and constraints influencing waste minimization in decommissioning; 6. Future developments for waste minimization in decontamination and decommissioning; 7. Conclusions and recommendations.; Appendix I: Dismantling techniques for decommissioning; Appendix II: Dismantling techniques for decommissioning; Appendix III: Measurement techniques for decommissioning; Appendix IV: Summary of approach to implementing a waste minimization strategy for the D&D of nuclear facilities.
