International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine: Achieving Change in Practice

11–15 December 2017, Vienna, Austria

Radiation Protection in Medicine Conference 2017

The use of ionizing radiation in medicine is well established, and has resulted in tremendous benefit to humankind in diagnosing and treating diseases. While the medical benefits are unquestionable, there is growing evidence of unintended and unnecessary use of radiation in medicine, creating the need for stronger radiation protection in medicine. For this purpose, the Bonn Call for Action was created at a 2012 IAEA-organized international conference in Bonn. The Call for Action highlighted the 10 actions to improve radiation protection in medicine in the 2012-2022 decade.

The International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine: Achieving Change in Practice will review actions and developments since the Bonn conference, with a focus on progress in response to its Call for Action. The Conference will review the overall approach to the implementation of these actions and look at how international organizations and other stakeholders can harmonize their actions for better impact. It will also allow stakeholders to discuss new developments affecting radiation protection in medicine. The 11-15 December gathering in Vienna is the third such international conference, following those held in Malaga, Spain (2001) and Bonn, Germany (2012).
