Net Zero World: The Youth Perspective Today & The Future

Two consecutive panel discussions focused on the Net Zero transition from a youth perspective. The first discussion will consider the role of youth in the Net Zero transition, examine why achieving Net Zero needs inclusive low carbon energy systems, and outline the best way to attract the young generation to nuclear science and technology. The second discussion will look at fusion energy’s role in long term sustainable energy and examine how international collaboration and innovation can be used to address technical and commercial challenges. The event will also discuss the role of youth in fusion energy research and innovation. During this event, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi will present the IAEA Net Zero Challenge Winner with a certificate.

Opening

The IAEA will highlight its support to youth in their pursuit of nuclear science and technology, including the IAEA Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme, among other initiatives. A young representative will highlight the importance of youth engagement and action on nuclear power and climate change.

Panel 1: Youth and Net Zero
This panel will highlight the role of youth in the Net Zero transition. It will address why Net Zero needs an inclusive, low carbon energy system and will explore how to attract the young generation to nuclear science and technology. This discussion will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

The IAEA Net Zero Challenge Winner will present her winning project and the DG will announce the IAEA Climate Internships.

Panel 2: Net Zero Beyond 2050
This panel will discuss fusion energy’s role in a long term, sustainable energy world. Technical and commercial challenges will be presented, including how international collaboration and innovation can be used to address them. The young generation’s role in fusion energy research and innovation will also be discussed, to be followed be a Q&A session.
