IAEA to Host International Conference on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Facilities

2017/16
Vienna, Austria

Some 800 participants representing governments, regulatory bodies, nuclear facilities, academia, industry and civil society will take part in the International Conference on Physical Protection of Nuclear Material and Nuclear Facilities at the IAEA’s Vienna headquarters from 13 to 17 November.

Physical protection against the unauthorized removal of nuclear material and the sabotage of nuclear material and nuclear facilities is a key element of nuclear security. The IAEA assists its Member States in developing and implementing a comprehensive physical protection regime, including any obligations and commitments they may have under international legal instruments such as the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM) and its Amendment, which came into force last year.

The conference will provide a forum for exchanging information, practices and experiences related to the physical protection of nuclear material and facilities. Member States are also expected to provide input on technical aspects of meeting their obligations under the CPPNM and other legal instruments. The conference is held in cooperation with the World Institute for Nuclear Security, the World Nuclear Transport Institute and the International Criminal Police Organization.

Press Opportunities

The opening and closing plenary sessions of the conference are open to media and both will take place in Boardroom B of the M Building. The opening session will start at 10 a.m. and include addresses by representatives of the IAEA, cooperating organizations and other relevant organizations. The programme can be found on the conference website. The main sessions may also be viewed via live video streaming.
