Background

As countries embark on nuclear power plant (NPP) construction projects and existing plants start facing long term operational challenges, it has become evident that knowledge transfer as well as lessons learned are among the key areas of importance. This webinar will provide a broad overview of new projects and units undergoing modification to ensure successful continued operation. Invited representatives from large scale nuclear power plant projects that have met budget and schedule deadlines will be sharing their experiences and lessons learned with interested stakeholders on successful project management strategies that have helped these nuclear power plant projects to be undertaken safely, in a cost effective manner.

Objectives

The objective of this webinar is to share lessons learned from the management of successful large scale nuclear power plant projects. Participants will be provided with information on the successful strategies implemented as well as challenges to avoid when embarking on large projects in their countries such as nuclear power plant construction.

  • Presentation on a new reactor construction project: Mr Muhammad Saeed Ur Rehman, representative from the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP) in Pakistan
  • Presentation on a reactor refurbishment project:  Mr Vince Smyth, Vice President of Construction Services for Ontario Power Generation), Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington Refurbishment Project in Canada
  • Q&A session moderated by Heather Morgan, Associate Nuclear Safety Officer in the IAEA Division of Nuclear Installation Safety 

Presenters

Mr Vince Smyth
Mr Smyth is the Vice President of Construction Services for Ontario Power Generation. He is responsible for the delivery of construction related services to the enterprise projects organization, including work planning, project assurance, quality management, process improvement and trades resource management.

Mr Muhammad Saeed Ur Rehman
Mr Muhammad Saeed Ur Rehman is a Member of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and is responsible for all nuclear power plants in the country both under-construction and operating. He is involved in the commissioning of all nuclear power plants of Pakistan and previously served as the Senior Manager (Commissioning) at Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-2 (C-2) in Pakistan.
