The IAEA and other international organizations at the Vienna International Centre are joining the world´s commemoration of the UN´s International Day of Peace today.
Events and exhibitions in Vienna include:
- A photographic exhibit Make Power - Not War featuring the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate - the IAEA and Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei - is on display in the lobby of the Austria Centre, throughout the week of the IAEA General Conference. (See Story Resources.)
- Writing, Painting and Singing for Peace: Children Celebrate Peace Day at the Vienna International Centre. Over 200 children and young people aged 6-15, from 70 different countries, studying at international and local schools in Vienna and Lower Austria will be visiting the VIC in the morning to sing songs of peace.
- Panel Discussion on Women, Peace and Security: The Vienna-based NGO Committee on the Status of Women will hold a panel discussion on Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, sponsored by UNIS Vienna. Panelists include: Daniela Rozgonova, Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO); Elisabeth Koegler, Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Paulina Analena, UN Security and Safety Service/United Nations Staff Council at Vienna; Ulrike Schelander, Care Austria; and Rosy Weiss, Vienna NGO Committee on the Status of Women, International Alliance of Women (Moderator). The panel is followed by a film screening of "Peace One Day", a production on the story of International Day of Peace.
International Peace Day has been commemorated over the past quarter century, on 21 September since 2001. Among the powerful peace signs promoted is a minute of silence at 12 noon in every time zone circling the globe.
