Cape Town, South Africa -- The importance of cooperation amongst the world´s nuclear regulators, and of building capacity for countries that are developing new nuclear power programmes as well as those that have an established programme, are among some of the conclusions reached by participants at an IAEA international conference that closed today in Cape Town, South Africa.
Defining the conference a "great success," Gregory Jaczko, Chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and President of the Conference, said he was satisfied with the conference outcome.
"We had really good discussions. People came together to address the challenges we face as regulators," he said.
The International Conference on Effective Nuclear Regulatory Systems was held in Cape Town, South Africa, from 14 to 18 December 2009. The conference theme was Further Enhancing the Global Nuclear Safety and Security Regime.
The five-day conference was organized by the IAEA and hosted by the Government of South Africa through the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR). The Cape Town event was the second in a series of meetings that began in 2006 in Moscow, Russia.
