Board of Governors September Meeting Concludes

On 13 September 2013, the IAEA Board of Governors concluded its third meeting of the year at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano opened the meeting on 9 September 2013 with an introductory statement and a Press Conference was also held on the same day. The full text of the statement can be accessed here and the Press Conference viewed here.

During their deliberations, the 35-nation Board discussed a number of issues, including: strengthening of the Agency's technical cooperation activities; strengthening the Agency's activities related to nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety; and nuclear verification. The reports on the Agency's activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications were also noted.

The Board approved the Nuclear Security Plan for 2014-2017 and held further discussions on the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, and reviewed the Nuclear Security Report 2013.

Board discussions took place on the application of safeguards in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East, as well as the implementation of the NPT safeguard agreements in the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic, respectively.

The next IAEA Board of Governors meeting will be held on 23 September 2013.
