58th IAEA General Conference Convenes in Vienna

The annual IAEA General Conference welcomes delegates and governmental representatives attending the week-long event that commences on Monday, 22 September 2014 at the Agency's headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

Considered to be the foremost event in its annual calendar of meetings, the 58th General Conference is taking place from 22 to 26 September 2014 at which representatives from IAEA Member States, including several at the ministerial level, will meet to consider the Agency's programme and activities and approve its budget for the coming year.

Delegates will deliberate on a range of topics on the peaceful development of nuclear technologies. These will include issues related to further strengthening the IAEA's programmes and activities in the areas of nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety; nuclear security; nuclear science, technology and applications; technical co-operation; improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Agency safeguards; application of the IAEA safeguards in the Middle East; and implementation of the NPT safeguards agreement between the Agency and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

At the opening session on 22 September, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano is expected to deliver his official statement to the Conference, in which he will highlight the major developments and achievements in the IAEA's work and programme for the previous year, and identify priorities in the year to come.

Scientific Forum and Other Events

A number of events are also being organized in the margins of the 58th General Conference. A special Scientific Forum on Radioactive Waste: Meeting the Challenge will be held on 23 and 24 September 2014. This Forum will examine the significance of an integrated approach to waste management, from its generation to disposal, available solutions and future developments in this specialized field. Additionally, dozens of exhibits and side events are scheduled throughout the week, underlining activities and special programmes being implemented by key departments at the IAEA and several Member States.
