UNMOVIC IAEA Press Statement on Inspection Activities in Iraq

News Update on Iraq Inspections

An UNMOVIC missile team traveled 125 km south of Baghdad to inspect the Al Ameer Factory, which is also known as the Saddam State Establishment. The factory was involved in the assembly of SCUD missile components before 1991, but has since been responsible for the fabrication of artillery equipment. Another missile team returned from Basra to Baghdad today. This team fixed inventory tags to the Al Fatah missiles at an army unit north of Basra yesterday.

An UNMOVIC multidisciplinary team inspected an airstrip and an adjacent storage area and visited a bombing range both in the Al Muhammadiah area, approximately 200 km west of Baghdad. Debris at the bombing range was investigated.

An UNMOVIC chemical team visited Technology University, Baghdad, to rebaseline the whole site. It also inspected the Department of Chemical Technology.

An UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Baghdad University College of Science for Women in Baghdad. This College educates women for high school teachers. Graduates also pursue careers other than teaching. Another UNMOVIC biological team inspected the Department of Biology at the Baghdad University College of Science in Baghdad. The Department teaches courses in microbiology, zoology, botany and environmental science.

The IAEA visited three sites: the Tuwaitha site, 24 km southeast of Baghdad; Technology University, Baghdad; and the Ibn Roshd Company, 26 km southwest of Baghdad. The purpose of the inspection at Tuwaitha was to confirm certain components of the Iraqi declaration. At Technology University, Baghdad, verification of scientific and technical activities was performed. The Ibn Roshd Company is the Quality Control Centre for the Military Industrialization Corporation (MIC).

Addition:

Yesterday, an UNMOVIC chemical team inspected the National Chemical Plastic Industry in Baghdad. This facility is a plastics manufacturer.
