In 2022, the IAEA’s annual General Conference (GC) was held from 26 to 30 September. It was attended by more than 2 500 <a href="#">participants</a> from 153 countries. Delegates also attended additional in-person and hybrid side events and exhibitions, which took place in advance of, and during, the week of the General Conference.

IAEA Supports Advances in Regulatory Infrastructure for Radiation Safety in the Caribbean

Nuclear science and technology play an important role in addressing issues in low-carbon energy demand, human health, food security and environmental pollution, and contribute to socioeconomic development around the world.

The IAEA works to foster greater interest in these technologies among youth, including in Asia and the Pacific. Student and teacher winners from a Virtual NST Education Competition visited the IAEA in Austria in May 2022 to present their projects and learn hands on about the many uses of nuclear technology.

Engaging Asian Youth in Nuclear Science

In Sri Lanka, women play a critical role in driving rural communities' economic development and ensuring food security. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Sri Lanka is largely self-sufficient in animal products except in dairy, where national consumption has steadily grown since the 1970s, outpacing supply. Boosting dairy production in the country will help empower women in rural areas and improve the country’s self-reliance.

How much will these children from the Eastern Philippines know about nuclear science and technology when they graduate from high school?

Quite a bit – according to new plans by the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology and the country's Department of Education, who are working on rolling out a nuclear science and technology education programme that has been piloted in selected schools in the capital region.
<br /><br />
The teaching material and its lesson exemplars were developed as part of an IAEA technical cooperation project involving several countries across Asia.
