Elasticsearch implemented as the new search engine for INIS

The INIS Secretariat continuously strives to deliver modern technological solutions to its users. We are pleased to inform you that at the beginning of this month, a new open source search solution, Elasticsearch, was implemented by the INIS Secretariat, replacing Google Search Appliance (GSA).

Prior to implementation, the INIS Secretariat conducted a pilot project to study the feasibility and compatibility of Elasticsearch as an alternative search engine. The successful execution of the project demonstrated Elasticsearch to be a capable and fitting solution for GSA, setting a solid foundation for a smooth and timely replacement. It also demonstrated a proactive and forward-thinking approach in the planning and development of the INIS repository.

The Systems Development and Support Group (SDSG) of the Nuclear Information Section implemented Elasticsearch seamlessly and in record time, with no interruption to INIS Repository Search (IRS) functionalities. The replacement of GSA also resulted in considerable savings for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In addition to core search functionality, the new search engine enables additional features. New and improved search functions will be made available in the near future. Access to the IRS is available here
