The Eighteenth International Conference on Grey Literature: Leveraging Diversity in Grey Literature, was held at the New York Academy of Medicine in the United States from 28 to 29 November 2016. The WorldWideScience Alliance participated with a poster on WorldWideScience.org – An International Partnership to Improve Access to Scientific and Technical Information and Research Data.
Dr D. Savic, Head of the Nuclear Information Section at the IAEA in Vienna, Austria, and Chair of the WorldWideScience Alliance, noted during a short presentation preceding the GL18 Poster Session, that the opening of the first shopping mall in 1956 in Minnesota, USA, changed the nature of retail business and consumer behaviour. All of a sudden, customers were able to meet all their needs at a single place, offering easy and convenient access, while saving time and money. Several decades later, in June 2008, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) created an ‘information mall’, offering scientific and technical information through a single address and a single access point (www.worldwidescience.org), that was easy to use and simple to navigate. Users of this ‘information mall’ are offered free access to a hundreds of scientific and technical information databases and repositories from 70 countries around the world. An intuitive interface and one click on the search button returns a wealth of information in textual, multimedia and data formats.
A real-time federated search using Deep Web Technologies’ Explorit Everywhere! software, with no pre-indexing, quickly finds information from multiple English and non-English sources. Queries can be performed in ten languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian. The multilingual search, powered by Microsoft Translator technology, makes scientific information and data more accessible to a worldwide audiences. The basic search form offers an interactive map which allows users to select a particular country of interest in order to more closely examine the available sources which are queried by the search engine. The advanced search allows easy selection of specific information or data resources, date range, or keyword searches based on the title or author. Search results are consolidated, relevance-ranked and presented in a list format offering additional filtering through topics, authors, publications, sources, document formats, type and date. Since 2009, the INIS repository has been included in WWS as an information resource.
