2007 School of Nuclear Knowledge Management
8 October 2007 - For the fourth time, a School of Nuclear Knowledge Management was held at the Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy, this year on 24-28 September 2007. The School was organized by the IAEA, in cooperation with ICTP and the World Nuclear Association (WNA).
The objective of the School was to provide participants with an overview and basic understanding of the tools, mechanisms and challenges of nuclear knowledge management ((NKM). Managing such knowledge requires special skills that can be derived from various disciplines and fields. The program of the School thus included lectures, presentations, practical sessions and discussions on
- policies and strategies in nuclear knowledge management,
- human resources and knowledge transfer,
- managing nuclear information resources,
- nuclear English,
- methods and tools for knowledge management including practical examples, and
- networking for education and training.
A session on Comparison of Curricula in Non-power Nuclear Applications and Development of Recommendations for their Improvement was held as a special event of the School.
The School also offered opportunities for participants and lecturers to exchange experiences and share information on implementing NKM, including lessons learned from knowledge management projects, and examples of good practices and national experiences in nuclear knowledge management. In additional, all participants received a Handbook of Nuclear Knowledge Management prepared by an IAEA team of international experts.
"My impression of this School is excellent, in particular the very good quality of the lectures and the overall organization" said Minodora Apostol from the Institute for Nuclear Research Pitesti in Romania, who was one of the 46 participants from 26 countries who attended this training event. She believes that what she has learned will be certainly of benefit for her organization and support its activities in nuclear knowledge management.
The next School of Nuclear Knowledge Management is scheduled for 1-5 September 2008 at ICTP in Trieste, Italy.
