IAEA Director General seeks endorsement from IAEA Board of Governors for programme to protect against nuclear terrorism

2002/01

In response to the worldwide threat of nuclear terrorism, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will table a plan outlining a wide range of measures to upgrade the IAEA's nuclear security programmes. Mr. ElBaradei will seek approval for the plan on the first day of the 18-22 March meeting of the IAEA's Board of Governors. The report puts a price tag on its proposed programme upgrades at $12 million per year. An additional fund will also be proposed for the urgent upgrading and procurement of security equipment for nuclear facilities, at a cost of $20 million per year.

The Board of Governors, representing 35 IAEA Member States, will also review measures to strengthen international co-operation in nuclear, radiation, transport and waste safety. It will further assess the state of the world's nuclear technology and focus on the Agency's plan to optimize nuclear safeguards.
