IAEA to Mark World Cancer Day with High Level Panel Discussion on Cervical Cancer

1/2020
Vienna

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will mark World Cancer Day on 7 February with an event focusing on the key role of nuclear and radiation medicine in managing cervical cancer.

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi will open the half-day event at IAEA headquarters in Vienna, entitled “Together in the Fight against Cervical Cancer”. A panel of prominent health specialists and IAEA experts will highlight the contribution of nuclear techniques in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cervical cancer. A second panel discussion will include the Permanent Representatives of Belgium, Morocco and Sweden, as well as representatives from the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The event will be moderated by Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Director General and head of the IAEA Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications.

The event will take place from 10:00–12:00 in Board Room C (C Building, Fourth Floor) of the Vienna International Centre (VIC). The programme is available here.

Though largely preventable and treatable in rich countries, cervical cancer kills nearly 300,000 women every year in the developing world. Radiotherapy is an essential tool in cancer care and a cost-effective way to treat tumours and ease pain. The IAEA supports Member States in their efforts to improve access to radiotherapy.

Live video streaming will be available from 10:00. Please note that the video stream will be broadcast on a view-only channel.

Interviews with individual speakers can be organized upon request.
