IAEA Launches New Safeguards Seal

Seals are one of the tools that IAEA safeguards inspectors use to verify that nuclear material is used only for peaceful purposes, at more than 1,300 facilities around the world. And this year, the organization is introducing a new generation of seals.

Safeguards are activities by which the IAEA can verify that a country is living up to its international commitments not to use nuclear programmes for nuclear weapons purposes. The global Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and other treaties against the spread of nuclear weapons entrust the IAEA as the nuclear inspectorate. Today, the IAEA safeguards nuclear material and activities in more than 180 countries.
