This event will present the winners of the African Students’ Competition on the Benefits of Nuclear Sciences, which was launched on 20 March 2023. The competition aimed to strengthen young students’ knowledge of the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology (NST), and to motivate young people to consider careers in the nuclear sector. Student videos on the role of NST in addressing challenges in cancer, climate change and agriculture will be presented.

This event will seek to discuss the emerging demand, capability and capacity to produce advanced fuels and the unique challenges and opportunities they present across the sector. Speakers will include political stakeholders and international industry practitioners who will share insights on key considerations, challenges and opportunities for driving the development of advanced fuels, including their impact on the non-proliferation landscape. This will include views from a diverse range of new fuel and reactor developers and novel operators who will use advanced fuels. This event is organized by United Kingdom.

The successful collaboration between nuclear regulators in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Republic of Korea (ROK) in delivering a safe and secure nuclear programme in the UAE is a noteworthy accomplishment for the global nuclear sector. This event will highlight the successful cooperation of the UAE’s nuclear programme with the ROK, which contributed to the UAE’s efforts towards achieving net zero carbon emissions and thus to international climate change efforts. This event is organized by the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Korea.

This event will discuss Radiation Safety in the Use of Radiation Sources in Research and Education (Safety Guide No. SSG-87) and the IAEA’s continuous efforts to promote partnerships among nuclear education and training institutions worldwide, showcasing its support to schools, colleges, universities and national regulators to implement nuclear education and research through guidance on the safe handling of radioactive materials.

Presentations will address capacity-building efforts for more effective, hands-on learning and how to engage and encourage young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) — the next generation of experts, researchers, leaders, trainers, teachers and lecturers in the nuclear field.

This event will mark the 20th anniversary of INLEX, which plays an important role in raising awareness and improving understanding of the nuclear liability instruments adopted under the IAEA’s auspices. As an expert advisory body to the Director General, INLEX provides authoritative advice and guidance on nuclear liability issues and assists the Secretariat in conducting outreach activities and providing legislative assistance to Member States.

The IAEA Archives are a pillar of the IAEA’s institutional memory, spanning over 70 years and comprising over 10 000 shelf metres of hard-copy records and 10 terabytes of data.

These walking tours are an opportunity to look behind the scenes to:

  • Experience the size and composition of the IAEA Archives;
  • Interact with some of the treasures in our holdings and be inspired by the Agency’s history;
  • View the Reading Room and an archival repository, and learn about challenges in preservation and access management; and
  • Hear how the Department of Management oversees the IAEA Archives.

With a revitalized interest in nuclear energy, the Government of Canada has signalled its full support through extensive tax incentives available to nuclear energy and manufacturing in the 2023 federal budget, and an additional investment of $970 million in Ontario Power Generation’s first of a kind GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy small modular reactor (SMR) project. This event will cover updates on Canada’s newbuild announcements, the refurbishment projects for Darlington and Bruce, the national nuclear waste strategy, and the fuel cycle. This event is organized by Canada.

The international nuclear community needs a more collaborative and mobilized leadership to achieve a more diverse, gender equal and inclusive nuclear sector. During an interactive panel discussion with high level speakers from different regions and organizations, participants will get insights into what is needed from leaders to accelerate progress in this area and meet the needs of the nuclear workforce. During the event, concrete action plans and commitments that support gender equality, diversity and inclusiveness will be showcased. This event is co-organized with the Group of Friends for Women in Nuclear and Women in Nuclear IAEA and will be followed by a reception. This event is organized by Spain.

This event will present the publication Uranium Resources, Production and Demand (Red Book 2022) jointly prepared by the Nuclear Energy Agency–and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as well as the IAEA uranium/thorium databases (U/ThDEPO).

Radionuclides play a critical role in both space missions and health care. With access to frequently used radionuclides becoming increasingly challenging, the United Kingdom is exploring novel production routes from an unlikely source. This event will explore opportunities for the extraction of radionuclides from the UK’s radioactive waste stockpile to address challenges of supply and availability of critical radionuclides for applications in the space and medical sectors, including extracting americium-241 to power ‘space batteries’, developing methods to extract lead-212 for targeted alpha therapies and assessing the wider stockpile for other potentially valuable isotopes. This event is organized by United Kingdom.

During this tour, visitors can learn about the safeguards equipment used by IAEA safeguards inspectors, from the preparation of equipment to be taken into the field, to the shipment of the equipment and its return to IAEA Headquarters.

At the event, the National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN) of Brazil will present opportunities and cooperation mechanisms aiming at creating value for different stakeholders. It will also showcase selected initiatives using nuclear sciences and applications, which are aligned with environmental and sustainable solutions, such as graphene technology and a pilot production plant; application of radiotracers in the oil and gas industry; and a mobile unit with an electron accelerator to treat and recycle industrial effluents and promote environmental decontamination. This event is organized by Brazil.

More than a year after the establishment of the Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative (NHSI), this event will provide information on the goals and progress made by the regulatory and industry tracks and discuss the way forward.

This event will present the ongoing IAEA coordination activities on nuclear fuel development, in particular:

  • The coordinated research project “Testing and Simulation for Advanced Technology and Accident Tolerant Fuels” (CRP ATF-TS); and
  • Fuel Materials for Fast Reactors (FMFR): Standardization of Subsize Specimens for Post-Irradiation Examination and Advanced Characterization of Fuel and Structural Materials for Small Modular Reactor and Advanced Reactor Applications.

This event, organized by Paraguay, will provide a forum for IAEA Member States and other interested parties to discuss and participate in the exchange of radiological and safety regulators, and to identify good practices and cooperation modalities to enhance safety. Although many organizations have leadership and management development programmes in place, not all of them take into consideration the unique characteristics and context of the new leadership model, which is guided by the group and not a single individual. In this regard, the event aims to analyse the effective integration of new collective leadership methods and approaches in the daily work of nuclear industry organizations, as well as the effective evaluation of collective leadership training and its impact on safety and organizational culture. This event is organized by the Russian Federation.

Today, universities and companies face a difficult task: to build new formats of interaction to ensure the socio-economic growth of their countries and enhance public acceptance of nuclear power.
