  • Internet Reactor Laboratory

    Date: 2014-03-04 | The video details the development of the IAEA's project for an Internet Reactor Laboratory. Through an internet connection, the control room and a research reactor itself can be linked visually to a distant classroom for the purpose of explaining reactor physics and conducting experiments interactively. As seen in the video, various procedures such as startups and shutdowns can be performed in collaboration between the reactor operator and students, who are then able to witness the results within the classroom. This activity, supported through the US Department of State?s Peaceful Uses Initiative, broadens the availability of a major application of research reactors, education and training, to Member States without a research reactor in order to train nuclear engineers and operators, and can be considered a cost-effective means to develop nuclear infrastructure for newcomer nuclear power programmes, as in Jordan. Indeed, the Internet Reactor Laboratory is under consideration for the purpose of regional cooperation in education and training using research reactors in Argentina and France. View Video →

  • TRIGA Pulse Operation

    Date: 2012-01-17 | Due to the prompt negative temperature coefficient of the TRIGA fuel composed of U-Zr-H it is possible to put TRIGA reactors routinely into a prompt critical condition without any damage to the fuel.
    The movies show the reactor core prior to the ejection of a pneumatic absorber rod ( at the right of the center of the picture ), this triggers a prompt nuclear excursion with a bright Cerenkov flash, a few moments later some steam bubbles can be observed streaming upwards from the core centre due to the high energy input.
    The reactor is automatically shut down after the flash which can be seen in the second slow motion movie when all three control rods drop into the core.
    The maximum power level at the pulse peak is around 250 MW for about 40ms while the reactor period is about 10 msec. View Video →
