IAEA Support of Research Reactor HEU to LEU Fuel Conversion
In December 2012 the US DOE National Nuclear Security Administration, the Vienna University of Technology, and the Government of Austria announced the successful return of all remaining US-origin highly enriched uranium (HEU) nuclear reactor fuel from Austria to the US. The IAEA Research Reactor Section was instrumental in facilitating an agreement between Austria and the US that will permit the operation of the Atominstitut TRIGA II Vienna reactor with LEU fuel until 2025. The unused HEU fuel was returned one full year ahead of the scheduled return date of December 2013. In addition to enabling important scientific research work, the Vienna reactor plays an essential role in supporting critical missions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), including instrument calibration, IAEA safeguards inspector training and other IAEA supported training.
