International Symposium on Uranium Production

2005/16

A press briefing will be held on Monday, 20 June 2005, at 12.30 noon at the Vienna International Centre, Press Briefing Room C03, following the opening of the International Symposium on Uranium Production and Raw Materials for the Nuclear Fuel Cycle - Supply and Demand, Economics, the Environment and Energy Security.

The five-day symposium will focus on uranium resources: primary, newly mined and processed - and secondary, highly enriched uranium from dismantled nuclear weapons, existing stocks and other sources.

Declining secondary supplies have pushed the spot price of uranium to over $75 a kilo from $28 a kilo in 2003.

The Symposium will bring together scientists, geologists, engineers, operators, regulators and fuel cycle specialists to exchange information about increasing primary uranium production.
