At the 43rd Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference, Member States
to strengthen cooperation for the new millennium. The Conference concluded 1 October at Vienna's Austria Center.
The General Conference elected as President of the Conference, H.E. Prof. Dr. Abderrahmane Kadri, Chairman of the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission. They also elected H.E. Ambassador Abderrahim Benmoussa, Resident Representative of Morocco to the IAEA, as Chairperson of the Committee of the Whole.
The Conference approved the applications of Honduras and Angola for membership in the IAEA, bringing the Agency's total Member States to 130.
The Conference also elected 11 new members to the IAEA Board of Governors: Algeria, Austria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Finland, Indonesia, Nigeria, Poland, Republic of Korea, and Syrian Arab Republic.
Director General's Statement
In his opening address to the General Conference, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei addressed global nuclear issues, focusing on the three pillars of the Agency’s work -- technology transfer, safety, and verification.
The Scientific Forumat this year's General Conference focused on the role of nuclear power in sustainable development. The two-day forum opened at 10:00 a.m. 28 September and concluded 29 September. Reports of the sessions, as well as the
