The 42nd Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference concluded 25 September 1998 with Member States supporting additional measures to strengthen the Agency's programmes in nuclear verification, technical co-operation, and nuclear, radiation, and waste safety.The Conference also adopted resolutions on nuclear testing and the application of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East.

At the opening session, delegates elected as President of the Conference, H.E. Ambassador Roberta Lajous Vargas, Resident Representative of Mexico to the IAEA. They also elected H.E. Ambassador Lance Joseph, Resident Representative of Australia to the IAEA, as Chairperson of the Committee of the Whole.

In his opening address to the Conference, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei outlined major steps for further strengthening the Agency's programmes in key areas related to energy development, nuclear safety, verification, and technology transfer. Read Dr. EBaradei's full statement.

Strengthened Safeguards
The European Commission and the 15 EU Member States signed three Additional Protocols on strengthened nuclear safeguards with the IAEA. Read the press release or view pictures of the signing ceremony.
