Dr. William G. Padolina

Dr. Padolina has been Secretary (Minister ) of Science and Technology of the Philippines since 7 July 1994. Before that, he was an Undersecretary in the Department of Science and Technology responsible for Research and Development.

Dr. Padolina is also a Professor of Chemistry in the University of the Philippines. Los Baños (UPLB) form 1988 to 1991 and Director of the National Institute of Biotechnology and Applied Microbiolgy from 1986 to 1990.

He is an Academician of the National Academy of Science and Technology. He was chosen by the Academy in 1982 as an Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of phytochemistry. He was chosen in 1985 as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men for Science and Technology.

He is Co-chairman of the Nuclear Power Steering Committee, an inter-agency body created by the President of the Philippines for the purpose of preparing a nuclear energy programme. He was Chairman of the Committee on Science and Technology of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 1994.

He is the author of 45 publications in refereed journals in natural products, chemistry, biotechnology and coconut chemistry.

Dr. Padolina graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of the Philippines, Los Baños, in 1968 with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Chemistry. He obtained his Ph.D. in Botany and Phytochemistry from the University of Texas in 1973.

He was born on 15 November 1946, is married, and has three children.
