The principal activity in the IAEA Department of Safeguards is performing nuclear inspections; supporting the inspection effort requires a large variety of different jobs!

The main areas, besides conducting inspections are: development and definition of inspection criteria and new safeguards techniques, the development and management of instrumentation required for inspections, a laboratory for analyzing samples taken during inspections, the review and evaluation of inspection results, financial and personnel administrative support, a training center for inspectors and other staff of the department, and a data processing center for providing computing and communication infrastructure and application development.

Here are sample job descriptions of some of the different posts in our department.

Safeguards Senior Inspector Be responsible for co-ordinating the work of the country officers; prepare for, co-ordinate and carry out safeguards inspections; participate in the evaluation of inspection efficiency; provide support for negotiation teams on subsidiary arrangements negotiations; assist in the implementation of the quality assurance programme.
Nuclear Safeguards Inspector Participate in the implementation of the Agency's safeguards system and function as a safeguards inspector; analyse, evaluate and report on the results of inspections; carry out measurements, calibrate instruments and perform routine service and maintenance of containment and surveillance equipment in the field; establish and maintain technical information on facilities.
Safeguards Information Analyst Contribute to provision of information services to the department by collecting, assessing, organizing and distributing information from internal and open external sources on a range of proliferation-related issues, evaluate and select analytical and data storage software tools and establish methodologies to support the evaluation process; analyze and evaluate information and prepare reports.
Safeguards Data Evaluation Assistant Contribute to the continuing efforts to determine the quality of safeguards measurement results and to participate in the design, testing and evaluation of new approaches and sampling techniques for safeguards.
Technical Standards Specialist Participate in standardization activities related to safeguards implementation, with particular emphasis on new measures associated with the strengthening of safeguards; develop guidelines, procedures, instructions and related performance standards.
Safeguards Data Evaluator Co-ordinate the process of destructive assay (DA) and non-destructive assay (NDA) measurement results; contribute to continuing efforts to improve safeguards implementation through the development of improved statistical analysis methods, co-ordinate the testing and implementation of selected optimized algorithms.
NDA Equipment Specialist Co-ordinate and be responsible for the setup, calibration, testing, commissioning, maintenance and repair of all safeguards non-destructive assay (NDA) and unattended radiation monitoring equipment.
Documentation Specialist Manage technical documentation: initiate, write, test and supervise the authorization, production and distribution of instrumentation and software documentation; review and approve facility specific procedures for compliance with authorized procedures.
Safeguards Training Officer Analyze, design, implement and evaluate technical training activities offered by the Section for Safeguards Training; organize and conduct internal and external technical courses, design instructional packages for tutored and self-training programmes, evaluate training effectiveness.
Senior Training Clerk Participate in the planning and implementing of the administrative aspects of the section; assist training officers, instructors and participants of training courses; review and edit course materials; prepare training statistics; schedule and co-ordinate training courses, modules and lectures.
Equipment Clerk Perform shipping, receiving and inventory services needed to supply inspectors in a timely manner with safeguards equipment and supplies.
Video Technician Install, maintain, and test containment and surveillance (C/S) equipment used for safeguards; be responsible for the technical aspects and documentation of C/S systems, perform acceptance testing and install systems in facilities, take part in preventive maintenance, diagnosis, repair and performance monitoring programmes for C/S equipment.
Section Head,   Software and Hardware Services Provide leadership for and manage assigned human and financial resources for the provision of application systems development and maintenance services; act as the focal point within the department for providing software and hardware solutions that are necessary to implement safeguards.
Office Clerk Provide secretarial and clerical assistance to the section head and other professional officers in the section; produce the documentation associated with the Safeguards Implementation Report and technical reports.
Systems Analyst, Programmer   Carry out analysis, design, implementation, maintenance and documentation of a constantly evolving range of application systems running on diverse platforms: IBM mainframe, Windows 95 and NT, UNIX. Evaluate, propose and implement hardware configurations as integral parts of the applications.
Data Processing Network Analyst Maintain, support and develop the Safeguards Data Processing network; develop, install, configure and test new remote access links and options for the Safeguards Network.
