Gender Equality Policy
The IAEA Gender Equality Policy aims to further gender equality by implementing gender mainstreaming in the Agency’s programmes and operations. Efforts to mainstream gender through the IAEA’s technical cooperation programme are guided by this policy, and by the 2006 Interim Gender Policy on Incorporating a Gender Perspective into Technical Cooperation. The objective of incorporating a gender perspective into technical cooperation activities is threefold. It is (1) to ensure that all staff, male and female, understand and promote the concept of gender equality, (2) to increase the representation of women in the professional categories and management positions within the Department, and (3) to ensure that all programming undertaken by the Department incorporates gender mainstreaming principles.
TC and gender mainstreaming
The overriding goal of all technical cooperation projects is to contribute to the development goals of the IAEA Member States, and to promote tangible socioeconomic impact. The likelihood of project success is greatly enhanced if the perspectives and needs of all project stakeholders – women, men, boys and girls – are taken into account. Involving both women and men in the conceptualization, management and implementation of technical cooperation projects increases project focus, effectiveness and impact. By considering gender, the overall quality and efficiency of the technical cooperation programme can be improved. In turn, by ensuring that the concerns of women and men are taken into account in the planning, design and implementation of programmes and projects, technical cooperation activities can contribute towards gender equality.
