DDG-TC official visit to Brazil

Kwaku Aning, Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, IAEA, paid an official visit to Brazil, on 18-19 August 2013. During his trip, the DDG visited several institutions and facilities that work with the IAEA through its technical cooperation (TC) programme.

The DDG visits the Nuclear and Energy Research Institute (IPEN).

IPEN is one of the most important national research institutions in Brazil and has played a decisive role in the development of nuclear science and technology in the country. 
<br> During his visit at IPEN, Mr Aning and his delegation receive a presentation on the research programme of the Nuclear National Commission of Nuclear Energy (CNEN), followed by a screening of a video on the work of IPEN. In addition, a presentation is given on TC projects related to IPEN. <br>
The DDG visits a radiopharmacy production facility to learn more about the impact the IAEA’s TC programme has made on the medical sector in Brazil.<Br><br> Radiopharmaceuticals are medicines used to diagnose certain medical problems or treat certain diseases.<br>The DDG visits IPEN's research reactor, IEA-R1.<br>
The DDG visits the Radiation Technology Centre (CTR). The CTR facilitates the development and the production of new iridium-192 high dose rate (HDR) sources and phosphorus-32 glass microspheres that are applied in cancer treatment.  <br>
The DDG visits the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. <br>
The DDG meets with Carlos Antonio da Rocha Paranhos, Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<br>The DDG visits offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and meets with Jurge L. Chediek, Resident Coordinator in Brazil, to discuss possible synergies for technical cooperation.<br>
The DDG meets with Angelo Fernando Padilha, President of the National Commission of Nuclear Energy (CNEN) and the board of Directors of CNEN Headquarters to discuss further cooperation possibilities with Latin American and African Member States.<br>
