Introducing the IAEA: TC welcomes a student visit from the American International School in Vienna

Students from the American International School

Students taking part in the Model United Nations (UN) class at the American International School (AIS) in Vienna have visited the IAEA to hear about the organization's work and the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

Scores of schools around the world take part in the Model UN, an academic simulation of the United Nations where students play the role of delegates from different countries, attempting to solve real world issues using the policies and perspectives of their assigned country.

The IAEA welcomed fourteen AIS students aged between 15 and 16 on 13 November 2014. The visit started with a tour of the Vienna International Centre, home to the IAEA along with other UN organizations, and the students then heard several different presentations on different aspects of the IAEA.

Ms Janice Dunn Lee, IAEA Deputy Director General (DDG) and Head of the Department of Management, spoke to the students about careers and working in international organizations. She talked about IAEA occupations, as well as her own career background and her work as a DDG.

The students were introduced to the role the IAEA plays in helping Member States in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology. The IAEA's technical cooperation programme, and various areas in which nuclear technology can be used, such as health, food and agriculture, and water and the environment, were described. There was also a presentation on nuclear non-proliferation and international safeguards.

The students then heard about the activities of the IAEA's Department of Safeguards, and were able to see some equipment used in the field.

To close the visit, Mr Kwaku Aning, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Technical Cooperation, came along to talk to the students about his role as DDG, and the important work carried out by the TC programme.
The students not only left with a better understanding of the IAEA, but also with knowledge which they can apply in their Model UN class, and, in the future, in their careers.
