6 December 2012 | Like nuclear power reactors, the safety of research reactors requires careful attention. Although research reactors are not covered by the Convention on Nuclear Safety, their safety is addressed by the IAEA’s Code of Conduct on the Safety of Research Reactors. IAEA technical cooperation in Africa: Addressing development challenges with nuclear technology
16 November 2012 | The IAEA supports the application of nuclear technology in over 40 countries in Africa in a wide range of areas through its technical cooperation (TC) programme. Human health is the top area of IAEA TC activity in the region at the moment, followed by food and agriculture. Other priority areas for TC in the region include human resource development, safety, industrial applications, water resource management and the environment. Read more »

IAEA and PAHO Strengthen Partnership
11 October 2012 | The Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the IAEA have signed an agreement to work more closely to ensure safety and quality assurance in areas of radiation medicine; and during radiological emergencies. Both agencies will also enhance information sharing; and undertake other joint activities in PAHO/WHO Member Countries, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. Read more »

GC 56 Comes to a Close 8 October 2012 | After five days of deliberations and side events, the 200 delegations to the IAEA’s 56th General Conference have departed the Vienna International Centre. The General Conference, held from 17 to 21 September, was attended by more than 3 000 representatives from Member States, observer countries, United Nations and specialized agencies, IGOs and NGOs, each seeking to learn more about the IAEA and its work in furthering the peaceful use of nuclear technology. Strengthening “cradle to grave” control of radioactive sources, including “orphan” sources, in the Mediterranean region, with EU support       
12 September 2012 | An interregional workshop on formulating national policy for radioactive waste management has been held in Egypt from 3 to 7 September. The workshop brought together 15 participants from ten IAEA Member States in the Mediterranean region, and focused on plans for the establishment of national policies and strategies to achieve sustainable “cradle to grave” control of radioactive sources. Supporting an integrated approach to water management in the Sahel
24 August 2012 | The first kick-off meeting of the IAEA’s new Sahel project took place in Vienna on 16-20 July 2012. The meeting brought together members from several African countries and international organizations to discuss the integrated management of the five major transboundary aquifer systems in northern Africa.

Better Soil Management With Nuclear Techniques
23 July 2012 | A week-long international symposium on Managing Soils for Food Security and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation has opened in Vienna highlighting the benefits of using nuclear techniques for farm and land management. Approximately 400 participants, consisting of scientists, policymakers, donors and collaborators from 80 countries and partner organizations, are signed up for the event.

Nuclear Techniques Help Farmers Survive Drought in Niger
24 May 2012 | In Niger, as in most of Sub-Saharan Africa, the frequency of drought has increased over the past century, causing famine in the Sahel nation, and massive population displacement. The use of traditional farming and livestock rearing practices in these harsh climatic conditions of water scarcity has led to reduced harvests. Livestock kills and losses in agricultural productivity have damaged the national economy. But there is hope on the horizon. Read more »

8 March 2012 | The Gamma Spectroscopy Laboratory of the Lebanese Atomic Energy Commission (LAEC) has been accredited according to ISO standard 17025. Nepal signs the Revised Supplementary Agreement (RSA) concerning the provision of Technical Assistance
21 February 2012 | RSAs govern the provision of technical assistance by the IAEA, and are required under the Statute and INFCIRC/267. It is important that Member States participating in the TC programme have an RSA in place, as these contain essential provisions, including safety standards and measures, peaceful use undertaking and safeguards, physical protection, and the transfer of title to equipment and materials.
