Alan S. Robinson completed a Ph.D on insect population genetics at the University of Bristol in 1971. Following a 2 year postdoctoral position with Agriculture Canada working on the genetics of codling moth, he was appointed as a Scientific Officer with the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture charged with developing genetic control methods for the onion fly. He also initiated work on genetic sexing of medfly and mosquitoes and was project leader for a mosquito programme in Pakistan. In 1987 he obtained a Senior Fellowship from the EU to train in molecular biology at the Institute of Molecular Biology, Heraklion, Crete where he carried out studies on the molecular genetics of medfly. He took up his present position as Head of the Entomology Unit at the FAO/IAEA Agriculture and Biotechnology Laboratory, Seibersdorf in 1994. |
