Gerrit Viljoen
joined the Section on 2 October 2003. He was previously Professor and Head of the Biotechnology Division at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute in South Africa. He obtained his DSc in Biochemistry followed by a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and a one-year sabbatical leave at the University of Southampton, England, studying the manipulation and control of genes. His group was the first to demonstrate the switching-on and switching-off of eukaryotic genes in vivo. In addition, his division in South Africa is involved in the generation of molecular diagnostic tools and recombinant vaccines.
