Uricase (EC 1.7.3.3)

Reactions

uric acid + O2 = allantoin + unidentified products

The enzyme is highly specific.

Purine degradation pathway

Properties

Commercial products are usually derived from porcine liver, ox kidney
Optimum pH: 8.5-10.5
Michaelis constant: 1.73 x 10-5

Inhibitors:

Excess substrate also inhibits this enzyme.

Distribution in animal tissues

There are few reports on the tissue distribution of uricase in animals.

In the blood of ruminants, uricase is either not present or is low in activity.
