The following is attributable to Serge Gas, IAEA Director of Public Information:
“The IAEA has been informed by Japanese authorities about the leakage of radioactive water into the sea at TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and Agency experts are following the issue closely.
“Japanese authorities have explained their planned countermeasures against current leakage and further leakages.
“The Agency has provided some recommendations to the Japanese authorities on the long-term management of liquid waste. The report from a decommissioning mission held in April 2013 encouraged TEPCO to review its strategy for accumulated water management and noted that it was of utmost importance to have adequate measures in place for detecting leaks promptly and mitigating their consequences. The IAEA continues to be ready to provide assistance on request.”
