For the fifty-sixth time since its founding, the IAEA General Conference convenes again 17-21 September 2012 to consider the Agency's programme and activities and approve its budget for the coming year.
High-level governmental representatives from the IAEA's 155 Member States, including several at the ministerial level, will be on hand to consider and discuss a range of topics on the peaceful development of nuclear technologies. They include those related to further strengthening the IAEA's programmes in areas of nuclear, radiation, and waste safety; nuclear security, nuclear science, technology and applications, technical co-operation; and improving the efficiency of the safeguards system.
Other items on the provisional agenda include implementation of the safeguards agreement with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea; and implementation of IAEA safeguards in the Middle East.
As customary, IAEA Director Yukiya Amano is expected to deliver a statement to the Conference during the opening session on 17 September, where he will highlight major developments in the IAEA's work.
Scientific Forum and Other Events
In conjunction with the General Conference a number of events are also being organized.
They include a special Scientific Forum on food for the future, focusing on nuclear applications related to food. The Forum will address IAEA activities in the fields of food production, food protection and food safety. Each session features a panel of experts who will present and discuss the benefits of nuclear techniques in food and agriculture. (Read the Press Release)
Additionally, a number of exhibits and side events are being organized to coincide with the General Conference. Selected Member States, as well as key departments at the IAEA will be holding activities in and around the Conference venue.
