IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano addressed the sixty-fifth regular session of the United Nations General Assembly, on 8 November 2010 in New York, presenting the Agency's annual report to the Assembly.
In his first address to the General Assembly, Mr. Amano reviewed the IAEA's work during the past twelve months and shared some thoughts with the audience on current nuclear issues.
In reviewing the progress made in bringing the benefits of peaceful nuclear technology to developing countries, as well as promoting and safeguarding the safe and secure use of nuclear power, the Director General touched on the areas of nuclear energy, nuclear applications, nuclear safety and security, technical cooperation and nuclear verification.
The General Assembly then took up the IAEA's fifty-fourth report (GC(54)/4), and adopted the resolution on the report of the International Atomic Energy Agency by consensus (A/65/L.10). The resolution was co-sponsored by 83 UN Member States and reaffirmed the General Assembly´s "strong support for the indispensable role of the Agency in encouraging and assisting the development and practical application of atomic energy for peaceful uses, in technology transfer to developing countries and in nuclear safety, verification and security."
