Director General Yukiya Amano met United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon on Friday, 8 January at the UN headquarters in New York.
During the meeting, Messrs. Amano and Ban Ki-Moon discussed overall coordination between the Agency and the United Nations, as regulated by the special agreement between both organizations.
Also, the Director General and the Secretary-General discussed issues of common interest, under their respective mandates.
Background
As an independent international organization related to the UN system, the IAEA´s relationship with the UN is regulated by special agreement [pdf].
In terms of its Statute, the IAEA reports annually to the UN General Assembly and, when appropriate, to the UN Security Council regarding non-compliance by States with their safeguards obligations as well as on matters relating to international peace and security.
