Looking Ahead to 2010

Here is a preview of nuclear-related events and other international developments taking place in the coming year.

January 2010

  • The World Economic Forum holds its 40th Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, 27-31 January, with a call to action to improve the state of the world through rethink, redesign and rebuild. IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano will be attending.

February

March

April

  • A Global Nuclear Security Summit opens in Washington D.C. from 12-13 April. Topics will cover nuclear terrorism and international efforts to secure vulnerable nuclear materials. The planned outcome is a communiqué pledging efforts to attain the highest levels of nuclear security, essential for international security and development and expansion of peaceful nuclear energy worldwide.

May

June

  • The IAEA Board´s mid-year meetings open in early June in Vienna.


  • The IAEA continues hosting its series of international conferences where operational safety of nuclear plants is an important subject. From 21-25 June in Vienna, Austria, experts and engineers will gather for a Conference on Operational Safety Experience and Performance of Nuclear Facilities.


  • An update on the global partnership against the proliferation of weapons and materials of mass destruction is expected at the Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF) is the biennial pan-European meeting dedicated to scientific research and innovation. The next forum takes place in Turin, Italy from 2-7 July 2010. The Scientific Programme will include talks on sustainable living and frontiers of energy research.


  • The 2010 Summer Institute of the World Nuclear University opens at the Christ Church University in Oxford, England.

August

  • The City of Hiroshima commemorates the dropping of the atomic bomb on 6 August 2010. This annual ceremony is held in memory of those who lost their lives, in the hope that the experience of the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will never be repeated. IAEA Director General Amano is expected to attend.

September

  • The United Nations´ International Day of Peace - marked every year on September 21 - is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace.


  • The 54th Session of the IAEA General Conference of Member States convenes in Vienna starting 20 September, preceded by meetings of the Agency´s Board the week before.

October

  • South Korea will host the 23rd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference in Daejon from 11-16 October.


  • From 25-29 October in Tokyo, Japan, specialists will review challenges faced by technical and scientific support organizations (TSO) in enhancing nuclear safety and security.

November

  • The Symposium on International Safeguards: Preparing for Future Verification Challenges is scheduled to convene 1-5 November in Vienna, Austria.


  • The IAEA Technical Assistance and Cooperation Committee begins its sessions in Vienna, from 29 November to 1 December 2010.


  • Medical physicists and other scientists working in radiation dosimetry are invited to attend an International Symposium on Standards, Applications and Quality Assurance in Medical Radiation Dosimetry to be held in Vienna from 9-12 November. Advances in radiation dosimetry during the last decade will be discussed.

December 2010

  • The last meeting of the Board of Governors takes place 2-3 December at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.
