Nutritional Needs of People Living with HIV/AIDS
Nutrition is one important area of the IAEA´s work receiving support through the Nobel Peace Prize Fund.
The IAEA is working closely with the World Health Organization to help people living with HIV/AIDS by providing guidance on the importance of nutrition in Member States´ response to the pandemic.
From 11 to 13 July at its headquarters in Vienna, the IAEA is hosting a three-day steering committee meeting to plan a regional consultation on nutrition and HIV/AIDS for Southeast Asian countries. The meeting, organized in close collaboration with WHO, includes participants from the IAEA, WHO, United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and World Food Programme, as well as regional and international experts on nutrition and HIV/AIDS.
The July meeting is a run-up to the WHO Regional Consultation on Nutrition and HIV/AIDS being held in Bangkok from 9-11 October 2007. It follows the successful experience of a Regional Consultation on nutrition and HIV/AIDS held in Durban, South Africa in April 2005, which mobilized Sub-Saharan African countries to include nutrition into HIV/AIDS policies.
The Regional Consultation in South East Asia aims to ensure that nutrition is part of the essential package of care, treatment and support for people living with HIV/AIDS in the second most affected region of the world.
