Second Review Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention

22 May 2006 | There will be a press briefing on Wednesday, 24 May 2006 at 10.30 a.m., in B0438 to report on the second review meeting of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management.

The number of Contracting Parties to the Joint Convention, which entered into force in 2001, now includes almost all countries with significant nuclear programmes.

The Convention applies to the safety of spent fuel and radioactive waste resulting from civilian uses.

Representatives from the current 41 states party to the Joint Convention are meeting in Vienna from 15 to 24 May 2006. The meeting is not open to the news media.

"The importance of the Convention and the review process is that it enables non-nuclear power countries and those with nuclear power to talk with each other frankly," said Andre-Claude Lacoste, President of the meeting and Director General of France´s Nuclear Safety Authority.

A summary report of the meeting´s findings will be published late on Wednesday.
