14, Saturday. Security Council Adopts Resolution Imposing Sanctions on DPRK. The United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution that imposes sanctions against the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea and demanded that Pyongyang cease its pursuit of weapons of mass destruction. It further demanded that the DPRK immediately retract its announced withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, return to that pact, and accept safeguards through the IAEA. The latest report of IAEA Director General ElBaradei on the implementation of safeguards in the Democratic People´s Republic of Korea (DPRK) was forwarded to the Agency´s Member States. 17, Monday: Security Council Unanimously Adopted Resolution. The DPRK was strongly urged to return immediately to the Six-Party Talks without precondition, to work towards the expeditious implementation of a September 2005 Joint Statement, "in particular to abandon all nuclear weapons and existing nuclear programmes" and to return soon to the NPT and IAEA safeguards. 19, Monday: Parties to the Six Party Talks Issue Joint Statement. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei welcomed a Joint Statement from the latest round of Six Party Talks that said the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) would abandon its nuclear program in exchange for economic aid and security guarantees. The Fourth Round of the Six-Party Talks was held in Beijing, and included representatives from the DPRK, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States from 26 July to 7 August and 13-19 September 2005. 17, Thursday: Director General ElBaradei Assesses Nuclear Proliferation Threats. In an interview with CNN, IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei assessed the threats of nuclear proliferation facing the IAEA and international community. He called for a reevaluation and reinforcement of the world´s Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which States are reviewing in May 2005. The IAEA Board of Governors today concluded its consideration of the Agency´s implementation of safeguards in the Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea).
