The Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) is a leading research institute of India engaged in basic research in several areas of experimental and theoretical physics and earth and planetary sciences. Founded by Dr. Vikram A Sarabhai in November 1947, PRL is an autonomous research institute under the Department of Space, Government of India. PRL initiated the formation of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and thus truly served as the cradle of the Indian Space Programme.
