AAI was founded in 1986 and is the umbrella organization of Austrian anti-nuclear NGOs and their partner organization in the neighboring countries. AAI began its work with a Conference on UN-security of Nuclear Reactors, parallel to the Conference on Reactor Security, held by the IAEA, coping with the Chernobyl disaster. Since then AAI has been working for a Nuclear Free Europe. AAI coordinates the work of the Austrian NGOs and the NGOs abroad. International cooperation is crucial to move the politics and economy to begin the phase out of the nuclear technology. The project NoNuC (Coalition of Nuclear Free Countries) has been established to assist in the facilitation of diplomatic cooperation which is necessary to reach the goal of a Nuclear Free Europe.
