| The United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs (DHA) was established in April 1992, following a 1991 request by the General Assembly to strengthen
coordination among the bodies that provide humanitarian assistance in response to emergencies. The department coordinates the timely and effective United Nations
and international response to sudden natural disasters such as earthquakes, drought and floods, technological disasters such as the explosion at the Chernobyl
nuclear power plant, and major humanitarian emergencies resulting from conflicts. |
